Dr. Edje is a board-certified family physician, chair of the family medicine review committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and on the executive committee of the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Education. She was on the writing group for the new requirements for family medicine training in the United States. She is an Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine alumna who was the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians 2012 Family Physician of The Year.  She was recipient of the 2022 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award from the University of Cincinnati and the Distinguished Humanitarian Alumni Award from Michigan Medicine. She started at Michigan State University at age 16 where she received a bachelor of science degree in physiology.  She was president of her medical school student body at the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) then completed her family medicine training, with honors, followed by 13 years in private practice and health system leadership. She subsequently returned to her residency program to serve as program director for seven years. She has since supported the founded two family medicine residency programs. Dr Edje has a masters in health professions education from the University of Michigan. As senior associate dean for medical education at UMMS, she supports the medical education of 770 medical students, 1300 house officers, and 3,000 faculty as well as medical education at the Ann Arbor VA. Her interests include mitigating bias in assessment, master adaptive learners, and medical education policy. She is the generative artificial intelligence (gen-AI) medical education champion overseeing the education workgroup of the Michigan Medicine gen-AI taskforce.

We are so delighted to host you as our commencement speaker and grateful that your cancer journey had a happy ending. On a personal note, it was a real treat to have you at my first officiation of medical school graduation. It was a memorable day indeed!

Senior Associate Dean

In her capacity as Senior Associate Dean, Dr. Edje has the privilege of serving medical students, residents, fellows and faculty as they progress through the continuum of medical education at the University of Michigan Medical School and Michigan Medicine. Her scholarship interests include mitigating bias in assessment, master adaptive learners and competency-based medical education.

Health Policy Expert

With over 20 years of experience as an elected member of organized medicine at local, state, regional and national levels, Dr. Edje has enjoyed working with collaborators to foment policy for the betterment of medical education of medical students, residents and fellows. Additionally, as a former Chief of Staff of her hospital, she has over twenty years experience advocating for organized medical staffs.

Family Physician

Her passion for patient care is central to Dr. Edje’s identity as a family physician. Comprehensive, continuous, coordinated and first contact care are integral threads that have been woven through all phases of her career. She had the honor of being 2012 Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year.
